How to Enter the 247 Tales Competition

The competition is open to anyone aged between 10 and 16 and resident in the UK.

You can only enter one story every month (but you can enter each month).

Your story must be 247 words or less. Any entries over this word count will not be considered. Winners will be selected by a panel at Bloomsbury

Please make sure you include your name, age, address and a contact number or email address on your entry. Winners will be notified either by post or email.

Terms and Conditions

Bloomsbury’s decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Lost, delayed or illegible entries will not be accepted.

Prizes are not transferable and no cash alternative is available for non-cash prizes.

Prizes must be claimed within 30 days of notification.

All entries become the property of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc; by participating in the competition, entrants consent to the use and publication of their names and contributions by Bloomsbury.

Participation in the competition signifies acceptance of these rules.


What is this month’s theme?

You can find this month’s theme on the home page of the website. Soon, you’ll be able to find out all the themes for 2013 in the Downloads section of the website.

When is the theme updated?

The theme is updated on the first of every month from May through to November.

Does my 247tale have to carry on from the author’s 247tale?

No, you are free to write any story you wish as long as it is on that month’s theme. The author’s tale is intended as inspiration to get the imagination flowing!

Is there a minimum number of words?

There is no minimum number of words for a 247tale. Any stories over 247 words will not be eligible.

Is the title included in the word count?

The title is not included in the word count. Each month’s theme is considered to be the title for all 247tales entered.

Will I receive confirmation that you’ve got my story?

Each story entered via email should receive a message stating that the entry has been received. Unfortunately we are unable to notify any stories sent by post that they have arrived.

What time on the deadline day does the competition close?

Each monthly competition closes at 2:47pm on the deadline day. Any entries received after this will not be eligible for that month’s competition.

Can you give me feedback on my story?

Due to the number of entries submitted each month we are unable to give feedback on any stories other than that month’s winner.

When will the winner and runners-up be announced?

Each monthly competition in 2013 launches on the 1st and closes on the 24th. The winners and runners up will be notified before the end of that month. The stories will go up on the website when the next month’s competition starts. Anybody who is not a winner/runner-up will not be notified to say they haven’t won.

How will I be notified if I’ve won?

All winners and runners up will be notified via email so please make sure you include an email address on all entries. Prizes are sent via post so please make sure to include a full postal address on all entries.

When will I receive my prize if I have won?

Winners and runners up will be notified by the end of that month’s competition. We aim to send out prizes within 24 days but as some titles may need to be ordered this can take longer.

I’m a teacher. Am I able to send in a batch of entries by my class?

Yes, you can email them to the 247tales address or put them in the post to 247tales, Bloomsbury Publishing, 36 Bedford Square, London WC1B 3DP.

    Hi, I am a teacher at an international school in Uganda. Can I still enter my children’s stories or do I have to be based in the UK?
